| Live Performance of Brian Friels Making History by Ouroboros Theatre
The Flight of the Earls, a seminal event in Irish history, has cast a long shadow over Ireland’s political and cultural life and has been brilliantly addressed by Brian Friel (arguably Ireland’s greatest living playwright).
Ouroboros intends to tour Making History in three stages by retracing:
1. The journey to the Battle of Kinsale (in reverse);
2. The journey from Mellifont Abbey to Rathmullan, via Dungannon (O’Neill’s birthplace) and Donegal, where O’Donnell lived; and
3. The journey from Rathmullan to Paris to Louvain
This follows an extensive education and outreach programme which has been run in tandem with the play. We also plan to celebrate the official opening of both significant sites to the public with Pyrotechnic shows at Castle Hill and Tullyhogue with a festival of Culture including music, song, dance and activity celebrating the 400th Anniversary of this significant period in Irish history. These events will mirror image the week long events happening simultaneously in Rathmullan to coincide with the commemorative date of the 400th anniversary of Flight of the Earls. |
| 8 Sep | Dungannon 2007 Be Part of It Town Centre / Castle Hill, Dungannon, Tyrone | |
| Walk the Plank Extravaganza
Giant figurine parade, plus fire drawing and pyro-technic show.
As night falls, the procession makes its way through the streets of Dungannon - wowing the watching public. As the Earls troop up to Castle Hill, people from all over the town can tune in to the soundtrack, which is being simultaneously broadcast on a local FM station.
A lift of noisy maroons accompany the start of the fireworks - and marks Red Hughs arrival back at his old seat of power. The jib of an enormous (60 metre boom) crane can clearly be seen. Seconds after the maroon lift, the audience witnesses a 2D rendition of the Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council logo (the towers and wall) being lifted slowly into view, accompanied by appropriate music. After attaining half of its height it suddenly bursts into flames, engulfing it totally, within a minute the clear outlines of the logo are visible in fire. The image of the Castle is now animated with pyro and a major firework display starts, finishing 10 minutes later with thunderous noise … Red Hugh has returned! |
